This South American Country Ranked #6 in the World Happiness Report — and It Has Some of the Best Beaches

For the first time ever, Costa Rica has broken into the top 10 of the World Happiness Report, landing a coveted #6 spot on the 2025 list alongside countries like Finland, Sweden and Iceland. It’s a huge moment for the small Central American nation—and one that reinforces what locals and travelers (myself included!) have known for years: Costa Rica is one of the best places on Earth to find joy, peace and pura vida.

While Costa Rica has consistently scored well on quality of life and sustainability indexes, this is the first time it’s officially ranked among the world’s happiest nations (and yes, we’re just as shocked)! The report considers factors like social support, life expectancy, freedom and generosity—all areas where Costa Rica thrives. But to me, this ranking also serves as a reminder: if a country can make its residents this happy, imagine what it might do for your spirit, even just on a short visit.

What Is Costa Rica Known For? Nature, Beaches, and Pura Vida

Costa Rica isn’t just an incredible place to live—it’s also a great place to explore. In many ways, the same factors that contribute to its national happiness also shape its appeal as a travel destination.

Natural Beauty in Every Direction

Let’s start with the landscapes. Costa Rica is home to two coastlines—Caribbean and Pacific—and hundreds of postcard-perfect beaches in between. Whether you’re surfing in Nosara, swimming in the calm waters of Playa Conchal, or catching a sunset in Santa Teresa, there’s no shortage of places to connect with nature and unwind. (We rounded up a few of our favorite Costa Rican beaches here).

A Leader in Eco-Friendly Travel

Then there’s the country’s commitment to sustainability. Over 25% of Costa Rica’s land is protected as national parks or reserves, making it one of the most biodiverse and environmentally forward-thinking nations in the world. This eco-consciousness isn’t just good for the planet—it also creates unforgettable travel experiences. Hike through a misty cloud forest, spot howler monkeys and toucans in the jungle, or relax in natural hot springs beneath a volcano. In my opinion, every corner of this country feels like a love letter to nature.

Living the Pura Vida Lifestyle

The cultural vibe is just as unforgettable. The pura vida lifestyle—which loosely translates to “pure life”—is more than a phrase. It’s a mindset. It shows up in the slow mornings, the warm smiles, the way people greet you like an old friend. I felt it instantly—like the whole country was gently reminding me to chill out and enjoy life a little more. It’s no wonder travelers often report feeling calmer, happier and more grounded after spending time in Costa Rica. The locals (known as Ticos) are warm, welcoming and proud to share their way of life.

A Wellness Traveler’s Dream

If you’re into wellness, Costa Rica has you covered there too. It’s become a global hub for retreats and healing getaways, with everything from jungle detoxes and breathwork to beachfront yoga and surf therapy. Nosara, Uvita and the Nicoya Peninsula (an official Blue Zone, where people live exceptionally long and healthy lives) are some of the best wellness destinations to unplug and recharge. On my last visit, I stayed in a small retreat center near Jaco, and even after just a few days of movement, fresh fruit and early nights, I felt more like me again. Add in some of the best coffee in the world, and it’s no wonder people leave feeling better than when they arrived.

Best Time of Year to Visit Costa Rica

If you’re thinking about booking a trip, the best time to go is during the dry season from December to April. You’ll get sunshine, warm weather and ideal conditions for hiking, beach hopping and spotting wildlife. This is also when most festivals and local events happen, so it’s a great time to really experience Costa Rican culture.

That said, I’ve also visited during the rainy season (May to November)—often called the “green season”—and it’s seriously underrated and has its own charms. The landscapes go full jungle-mode, the prices drop and you’ll likely have stretches of beach or forest almost to yourself. Just bring a rain jacket and an open mind, and you’ll still find plenty of adventure.
