Rum is the official drink of the Caribbean. Hadn’t you heard? There’s nothing like sitting by the warm, relaxing Caribbean waters with a glass in your hand, watching the sun settle over the waves just like in a classic Jimmy Buffet song. You certainly know how to drink and enjoy Caribbean rum, but what do you know about its history, and how it’s made? Well, on the sunny, magical island of St. Croix, you can learn something new and still sip rum all day on a tour of the island’s two local distilleries.
The Captain Morgan Visitor Center
Indulge your inner pirate by visiting this popular international rum brand’s public visitor center. For a small fee, you can peruse the center’s exhibits, learning the history and legend of Captain Morgan, as well as the drink of rum itself. Enjoy a guided tram ride through the distillery before hitting up the on-site tavern and the gift shop for some seriously fun souvenirs. You can arrange for tickets in advance on the center’s website, so you don’t have to risk long waits. And yes, children are allowed on the tour as long as they are with an adult of legal drinking age.
Cruzan Rum Distillery
Although perhaps not so boisterous and flashy as the Captain Morgan distillery experience, no rum tour of St. Croix is complete without a trip to the longstanding and historic Cruzan Rum Distillery. Visitors to this old family-owned distillery can have the pleasure of wandering the open-air warehouses of aging rum — part of this fine liquor brand’s multi-step process of crafting their award-winning wares. Sample over 20 different flavors, including old favorites like Cruzan single barrel rum, and wacky newcomers, like blueberry lemonade rum. Note that the distillery is closed on Sundays, unless a cruise ship is arriving on that day.
All in all, you could end up tasting 39 total varieties of rum in one day while touring these two historic rum distilleries on the island of St. Croix.
